Did you Know - Zimbabwe’s UMC donated 1,542 acres of land to build Africa University?

In 1985, a site selection committee chose Zimbabwe as the location for what is now called Africa University. United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe donated 1542 acres of land in the Nyagambu River Valley, across the road from the Old Mutare UMC Mission Centre in 1987. After the 1988 General Conference, the United Methodist Church approved the founding and financial support commitment of the university, and January 21, 1992, Africa University was charted and recognized as the first private university in Zimbabwe.

ABOUT AFRICA UNIVERSITY FUND (AUF)

Africa University is the first and only fully accredited institution of higher learning, and was established on the African continent by action of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church in 1988. It was the first recognized private university to open in Zimbabwe. The setting up of the university included a national process of consultation. It served as a catalyst for new legislation leading to the creation of the National Council for Higher Education to supervise higher education development in Zimbabwe. For over 30 years, Africa University has shaped the lives of thousands of young people all over the continent of Africa by equipping them with the knowledge to alleviate poverty, build peace and stability and drive development. Most of the graduates return to their home countries to make a difference. Because of generous gifts to this fund, Africa’s new generation of leaders is better prepared and equipped to prevent and resolve conflict and build lasting peace on the continent. This fund is managed through the Africa University Development Office.
