What is Disability Awareness Sunday?

Disability Awareness Sunday is one of five Annual Conference Special Sundays that highlight ministries and causes important to the entire United Methodist Church. On this day, we recognize the gifts, needs, and contributions of people with disabilities. It’s a time for congregations to reflect on how the church can be more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to all of God’s people.

Why Does It Matter?

This day reminds us that inclusion is not optional—it’s central to living out the gospel. It challenges us to remove physical, social, and spiritual barriers so that all can worship, lead, and serve. When churches improve accessibility, offer inclusive programs, and invite people with disabilities into leadership roles, they create a stronger, more compassionate community.

Disability Awareness Sunday matters because every person is created in the image of God and called to participate fully in the life of the church.

What Does My Giving Support?

Special Sundays give us a chance to focus our prayers and support on important ministries all year long—uniting our gifts to multiply our impact. Gifts received on Disability Awareness Sunday support ministries that promote accessibility, education, advocacy, and support for people with disabilities. This includes training for churches, grants for accessibility improvements, and resources that empower individuals with disabilities to participate in every aspect of church life.

When is Disability Awareness Sunday Celebrated?

Disability Awareness Sunday is observed on a date set by each Annual Conference. Churches are encouraged to celebrate it on a Sunday that aligns with their local ministry goals and calendar.

How Can I Be Part of the Ministry?

You can participate by helping making your church more accessible, listening to the voices of people with disabilities, educating your friends, and supporting related ministries through your gifts. Most importantly, you can help build a church where every person is welcomed, valued, and empowered to live fully into their calling.
