Position: Finance Manager

FLSA status: Contract 

Commitment: Approx. 6-8 hours/week

Compensation: $24 an hour

Position Overview:

Manage the financial assets of the church to meet the needs of its mission and vision effectively.

Essential Responsibilities/Duties to support UVC’s Mission:

Human Resources

  • In partnership with Admin Manager, set up and maintain denominationally-affiliated pension plans for clergy and full-time staff.
  • Review financial contracts (offer letters) to ensure they accurately reflect our intended financial commitments.
  • Review annual financial contracts for clergy appointed in the UMC.

Accounts Payable

  • Ensure timely and consistent payment of rental costs for each site, with attention to various pay structures and contracts.
  • Ensure timely and consistent payment of all bills.
  • Facilitate reimbursements in compliance with best fiduciary practices.

Accounts Receivable

  • Record all income received through bank deposits and online platforms.
  • Maintain giving records in Church Center, in coordination with the Admin Manager.

Church Budget

  • Assist the Finance Committee in creating the annual budget.
  • Track, account for, and report on income and expenditures.
  • Track, account for, and report on special grants.
  • Produce monthly financial statements for the full congregation.
  • Produce individualized quarterly budgets for clergy.
  • Flag and communicate any financial concerns (e.g., deficit spending, underspent grant funds, etc.).
  • Attend monthly finance meetings (virtual)

Advice + Guidance

  • Support problem-solving around financial structures or procedures that meet the church’s diverse needs.
  • Assist in fulfilling the church’s financial obligations to the Northern Illinois Conference of the UMC.

Technical 

  • Use relevant platforms for bookkeeping and budget creation (QuickBooks).
  • Work with the Admin Manager to maintain and update our online payroll platform (Paycor).

Essential skills

Technical

  • Proficiency with platforms for bookkeeping and budget creation, including QuickBooks, Google Drive (Docs, Sheets), and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency in navigating online banking platforms to manage accounts, monitor transactions, and ensure timely payments and deposits
  • Experience managing and maintaining church membership and giving databases, specifically using Church Center and Breeze.
  • Collaborate with the Admin Manager on maintaining and updating the online payroll platform (Paycor).

Organizational

  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational capacity.
  • Ability to deliver on requests in a timely, consistent, and accurate manner.

Accounting/Bookkeeping

  • Experience effectively managing accounting for a complex organization.

Education + Experience

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Accounting/Bookkeeping and Payroll Experience

  • Trustworthy with sensitive information and financial access
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Understanding of the United Methodist structure and system a plus
  • Dependable, communicative
