Mission Studies at BU

The Boston University School of Theology has a rich history of missionary outreach from its beginnings in 1839 as the first Methodist theological seminary in North America. By the time of the 1910 World Missionary Conference, at least a hundred graduates from the School of Theology had gone overseas as missionaries. In addition, many women missionaries spread across the globe after graduating from the BU School of Religious Education and Social Service. Boston University graduates founded churches, colleges, and theological seminaries around the world, as well as evangelistic and social service agencies in the United States.

The tradition now continues through the work of the School’s Center for Global Christianity & Mission, and by offering advanced degrees in Missiology (ThD), and Christian History and Mission (ThD).
