Church drum ministry shares musical gifts

Charles Hill is a young man with a wise message: "Once you find your gift from God, I'm telling you, you’re going to want to do it all the time." He found his gift playing the drum as part of the Steel Pan Ministry at his church in New York. The group started when seven girls in the congregation began to attract attention for their musical skills and in 2003 expanded to a coed band. Today this orchestra based at Westchester United Methodist Church in the Bronx plays for worship services and community events. Church member Carlene Brown says the ministry fits the community perfectly: "There are about 28 different cultures in the church. We have different parts of the Caribbean and parts of Africa. But what binds us all together is the religion and the music."
