The next “Raise Your Voice Against Racism” will take place on October 19 at 5:00pm PST /8:00pm EST. The focus of this hour-long webinar will be on “The Criminalization of Young Black Girls”. Researchers have found that even though Black girls don’t misbehave more than white girls, they are more likely to be disciplined in school and often receive harsher penalties for the same infractions. While black boys are suspended three times more than white boys, black girls are suspended six times more than white girls. This is true in every state across the country. For girls, education is a necessary factor to protect them against involvement with the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Black girls are frequently marginalized and criminalized by the educational system, a system which should be safeguarding their well-being. And this marginalization and criminalization has devastating and long term effects on their academic, social, and emotional lives.
