Would you like to prepare to do "pulpit supply" or lead worship with your pastor? This course will focus on basic understandings of worship and gaining skills for lay servants and lay speakers planning and leading worship. It fulfills requirements for leading worship and planning worship needed for lay speaker certification. We will explore our United Methodist worship history and the current authoritative "basic pattern" of worship and Holy Communion, the task of planning worship and various settings and approaches where lay servants and certified lay speakers may lead worship. In addition, we also will explore the work of reading Scripture, leading prayer, assisting at the Lord's Supper and baptism, and other roles in worship leadership. All students are expected to have or have access to The United Methodist Hymnal (1989) and The United Methodist Book of Worship (1992). All other course materials are included as downloads in the course. Note: Be aware that this course has daily assignments and there is an expectation of daily online group participation. Students should expect to spend a minimum of an hour a day on weekdays for the duration of the course. Some participants have said they spent two to three hours on course readings and responses each day. If your time zone or daily schedule requires you to post assigned work late in the day for the continental U.S., you should plan to post the night before the assigned discussion so that your comments will be included in discussions.
