WELCOME

Grow in faith and service with historic St. Paul United Methodist Church as we embrace our contemporary role as "The Soul of the Arts District". The only church in downtown Dallas rooted in African American traditions of worship, St. Paul is the sole survivor of what was, for over a century, a neighborhood of monumental black churches. The congregation that greets you today is the same community that has worshiped on this very site without fail since its establishment by a visionary body of recently freed slaves in 1873.

From its founding in a brush arbor to its current standing as the oldest community presence in what has become the Dallas Arts District, St. Paul has remained committed to the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, tithing, and Bible study. Nowhere else in Dallas and in few places remaining in our nation do the words

"God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou Who hast brought, us thus far on, the way"

ring with greater historic resonance than within the serene walls of our recently restored sanctuary. "Lest our feet, stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee," we remain on "the place for which our fathers sighed" united in prayers for our continued guidance along His path. There is no greater testimony to the power of those prayers than the fact that, where here God planted a church in 1873, here we remain. Come feel the power of enduring faith within our storied walls.

Wherever you may be in your personal faith journey, know that our table is the Lord's table. We are not to say who may or may not come. For this reason, our table is always open to you. When you join us at St. Paul, you join a family.
