Just as Jesus Christ invited everyone, we seek to faithfully extend Christ’s life-giving welcome to all people. Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church recognizes that diversity is one of the greatest expressions of God’s creativity, presence and grace. As a congregation, we are grateful for the many differences apparent in our community and in our experiences of God. We welcome all people into the life of this church, and celebrate and give thanks for our diversity of race, ethnicity, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical and mental ability, faith background, economic status, appearance, marital condition, political persuasion, education, and life experience. We hope you will join us as we continue to discover how we can most faithfully include, learn from, and grow with all people in our community.
You are welcome here. Come join us one Sunday at 11:00 am. You can come just as you are.
What To Expect
We are at 900 Massachusetts Avenue, Northwest – in the heart of downtown Washington D.C. on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and 9th Street (NW) and is just steps from the Washington Convention Center, and blocks from the National Mall, the Smithsonian, theVerizon Center, and Chinatown. The church is easily accessible by Metrorail at Metro Center, Mt. Vernon, and Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro stations, Metrobus, and DC Circulator. For more information, visit Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and DC Circulator.
We gather every Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. as a congregation composed of longtime members and visitors, people filled with faith and people filled with doubt, individuals who know the Bible well and folks who are picking up a Bible for the first time, people who have always been in church and people who have never set foot in a church before. We gather, and we seek to be authentic – real – honest – genuine.
Our weekly worship includes a lot of congregational singing, the reading of scripture, prayer, choral and instrumental music, moments of silence for reflection and listening to God, and a message that seeks to be relevant, applying the Bible to our lives as individuals and as a community of faith.
Worship is held in the historic building at 900 Massachusetts Avenue, NW. The 1917 building is filled with marble and stained glass, beauty and majesty, awe and wonder. The building has the power to touch you, but we hope and pray you will be touched more by the people who gather in the pews with you to celebrate God’s presence in our lives.
You are welcome to come just as you are (some people wear shorts or jeans and other people wear a suit and tie – come in whatever way is comfortable for you – we do not care what you wear!), remain for worship, and then join us for coffee following the service.
We look forward to seeing you!
