Chicago, Illinois: The Rev. Dr. Amy Valdez Barker will be leaving her role as Chief Connectional Ministries Officer of the Connectional Table effective July 30, 2017 to accept the position of Executive Director for the Global Missions Connections at the General Board of Global Ministries.

Dr. Valdez Barker has provided leadership for the Connectional Table for six years, first as its Executive Secretary and then as Chief Connectional Ministries Officer. Members have credited her with bringing to the position a deep passion for the church, a sharp intellect, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

“One of Dr. Valdez Barker’s greatest contributions has been her work to form and strengthen the relationships that are vital to the work of the Connectional Table,” said Bishop Christian Alsted, chair of the Connectional Table. “Her commitment to communicate and to listen to people has helped to build relations and strengthen the collaboration that is essential to the CT’s work of promoting vital congregations through the Four Areas of Focus and living into what it means to be a worldwide church.”

In her new role at Global Ministries, Dr. Valdez Barker will continue her efforts to strengthen relationships and build collaboration. As she notes, “This role will help me and challenge me to build multiple partnerships within The United Methodist Church and with our ecumenical brothers and sisters in Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. I will be on the ground building the relationships that extend the world-wide work that has so involved the Connectional Table.”

Bishop Christian Alsted notes, “Amy Valdez Barker has tirelessly worked to connect with leaders across the connection and modelled a deep appreciation of the resourceful diversity of the denomination as we engage in mission together. With her outstanding strategic skills, her strong communicative gifts and her commitment to collaboration, she has built strong partnerships, which the Connectional Table will build on, as we move into the future. I wish Amy Valdez Barker God’s speed as she transitions into the opportunities her new position at Global Ministries entails.”
