Kansas West Annual Conference met under the leadership of Bishop Scott J. Jones. The theme was "At Your Service" and focused on radical hospitality.
The conference celebrated camping, campus ministry and church development projects funded through the conference's capital campaign.
Bishop Robert Schnase, Missouri Area, was the featured plenary speaker. He spoke on the "Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations," focusing on radical hospitality.
The conference adopted a resolution addressing immigration reform that calls upon the conference to create a task force to address immigration concerns and develop plans of action which might include providing material aid, legal services, interpretation, spiritual support and vigils and public witness pointing toward justice and humane treatment of immigrants. It also calls for the conference to study the new General Conference resolutions on migration and immigration, and participate in training and education on immigration.
The conference adopted a $5.7 million budget for 2010. The body also adopted resolutions: 1) declaring September Open House Month; 2) encouraging local churches to celebrate clergy appointments to local churches; 3) establishing a Retirement Homes Sunday to collect an offering for two retirement homes affiliated with the conference; and 4) setting the third Sunday in September as Rural Life Sunday. The conference also voted on the 32 proposed Constitutional Amendments. The results of the votes were not announced.
Bishop Jones commissioned nine into the ministry of elder or deacon and ordained six elders received into full membership. Nine retired from ministry.
Membership stands at 82,763, down 961 (1.1 percent) from 2007. Worship attendance stands at 33,773 down 520 (1.5 percent) from 2007. Sunday School attendance stands at 13.035, down 919 (6.6 percent) from 2007.
