Can we use electric candles in the sanctuary?
Decisions about worship appointments, such as candles, are made by each local church. There is a great diversity of practice among United Methodist congregations, so talk with your pastor.
United Methodist Altars: A Guide for the Congregation suggests that "everything should express to the worshiper the qualities of truth, integrity, simplicity, and purity. Anything that expresses falseness or pretence, or that is gaudy or cheaply ornate, should be avoided...Electric or battery-powered lights that look like candles violate the principle of integrity in worship; they appear to be what they are not."
