Rising from the passion for global health that was sparked by Nothing But Nets, Imagine No Malaria is the United Methodist church-wide effort to overcome malaria in Africa.
As our first step in this effort, the people of The United Methodist Church joined the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the United Nations Foundation in a special project to cover the entire vulnerable population of Sierra Leone with bed nets.
Saving Lives in Sierra Leone helped provide resources that will send 1.2 million bed nets to that country in 2010. Thanks to the efforts of The United Methodist Church and our partners, thousands of people will be alive in the coming years that might otherwise have perished from malaria.
Sierra Leone Facts
- Sierra Leone ranks as having one of the highest maternal and child-mortality rates in the world – 40% of these deaths are a result of malaria.
- Malaria kills 3,000 people each day across the world, primarily children under 5 years old and pregnant women – 90% of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.
- In Sierra Leone, only 5% of children less than 5 years of age sleep under the protection of an insecticide-treated bed net.
- Malaria is both preventable and treatable.
- Rwanda and Ethiopia have cut malaria deaths by more than 50% using simple tools like bed nets though concentrated efforts.
If adequate protection, education, and access to quality health care are available, we can eliminate deaths from malaria.
