INTRO:
Going green is a daily commitment to reducing and reusing, but it is hard to know where to begin. A family shows us how the seeds for saving the planet were planted for them. Kim Riemland has their story.
SCRIPT:
(Locator: Pleasant View, Tennessee)
Skylar Fuller, Green Enthusiast: “We’re going to make laundry soap. Mama, we need soap.”
Skylar Fuller is turning leftover bar soap into laundry detergent.
Skylar Fuller: “Okay, we got our soap.”
Sixty miles away at Middle Tennessee State University…
Nicole Collyard, Green Enthusiast: “My mom makes homemade laundry soap. And this is what she gives it to me in.”
…Skylar’s sister Nicole puts the product to use.
Nicole Collyard: “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen homemade laundry soap, but it’s chunky and I thought this is really weird and she said that’s because there’s no chemicals in it.”
Their mom Rita…
Rita Fuller: “Why don’t you do it this way so you can hand them to me?”
…dries her clothes in her bedroom.
Rita Fuller, Green Enthusiast: “A lot of people think it’s crazy but I just close the bedroom door if someone’s coming over and I don’t feel like explaining why I have laundry hanging up.”
Three generations of Fuller women…one inspiration.
Bob Fuller, Green Enthusiast: “When he’s talked at our church, it just made sense.”
Bob Fuller is talking about Dr. Matthew Sleeth.
Dr. Matthew Sleeth (speaking at a church): “That was a turning point in my life.”
The environmentalist spoke at the Fullers’ church, Pleasant View United Methodist, about how to take better care of the planet.
Bob Fuller: “After I read Dr. Sleeth’s book, somehow it clicked with me.”
It clicked with everyone in the household…
Skylar Fuller: “It’s cold!”
…especially seven-year-old Skylar.
Nicole Collyard: “They won’t let her recycle at school.”
Rita Fuller: “She’ll bring home her banana peel. She’ll bring home her empty yogurt container.”
Skylar Fuller: “All the stuff I can compost and take home I put back in my lunch box.”
Skylar is heavily involved in the recycling program at church.
(Taking recyclables from church to trunk of car)
Skylar Fuller: “Okay, I got it.”
Every week she hauls what she can lift to the recycling center.
Skylar Fuller: “I’m mixing up the Borax and washing soap in water.”
Three generations of Fuller women and Bob hope others will see their example and go green too.
Bob Fuller: “If we don’t take care of this planet, it won’t take care of us.”
Skylar Fuller: “I’ll get the cover. And now we wait until tomorrow. Now we’re done.”
