Hundreds to attend the annual UMEIT:USA and NWCU gathering
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 9, 2018
WASHINGTON – About 200 people, including six young adults sponsored by the Council of Bishops, will be gathering near Washington, D.C., next week for the United Methodist Ecumenical and Interreligious Training (UMEIT:USA) and the National Workshop on Christian Unity (NWCU) gathering.
The gathering is for all persons interested in ecumenical and interreligious ministry. Additionally, the events are for those who chair their annual conference’s CUIR (Christian Unity and Interreligious Relationships) Committee, who may be able will use these events part of their annual time of training.
UMEIT:USA is the annual training in the United States for United Methodists engaged in ecumenical and interreligious ministry through the church. The NWCU is an opportunity for Christians who care about ecumenical and inter-religious ministry to learn and network.
The NWCU and UMEIT occur parallel to each other once a year in a different area of the United States. The 2018 sessions will be held at the Sheraton Silver Spring in Silver Spring, Maryland from April 16-19, 2018.
Among the attendees will be: Nona Woodle, a student at Boston University; Natalie Buck, a student at Emory University; Ian Collier, a student at Duke University; Akiko Miyake-Stoner, an elder in California; Kate Hillis, an elder in the Greater New Jersey Conference; and Uziel Hernandez, an elder in Illinois; who are recipients of the Council of Bishops scholarships of $300 each to assist with the costs of attending.
“We are excited about this year’s UMEIT:USA and look forward to many Methodists gathering for the training. This year our focus will be on interreligious engagement and ministry on a local level, so every annual conference doing that kind of ministry will want to consider sending a representative,” said the Rev. Dr. Jean Hawxhurst, Ecumenical Staff Officer for the Council of Bishops.
Both UMEIT and NWCU are open to the public.
