Germany UMC donates $185,000 to Imagine No Malaria
SCHWARZENBERG, Saxony (Germany) - May 22, 2014 - Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton, Pittsburg, PA, was presented with a check for $185,000 from Frank Aichele, Mission Secretary of The United Methodist Church in Germany. This donation from the Germany UMC will support Imagine No Malaria.
"It is an order of God, to allow people a worthy life. That is why Imagine No Malaria is more than just collecting money," Bickerton said at the check presentation.
Since the campaign started, the mortality rate of malaria has been cut in half. In Sierra Leone (West Africa) the numbers of malaria diseases declined by 70% since the first nationwide distribution of mosquito nets began. In June, another nationwide campaign to distribute mosquito nets will take place in Sierra Leone. The same is planned for Malawi (Southern Africa) at the beginning of next year. Methodists from Germany have contributed a total of $300,000 to the campaign.
The check presentation took place during the meeting of the East Germany Annual Conference in Schwarzenberg (Saxony) to which Bickerton was invited. Both conferences connect a 25-year partnership that will be honored during the conference session.
