NEW YORK (UMNS) - A year to the day before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the civil rights leader made a major public speech against the war in Vietnam. John C. Goodwin, then 25 years old, was at Riverside Church in New York to document it.

Men's leaders urge Scouts to delay change


NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Citing the "overwhelmingly" negative feedback, leaders of United Methodist Men have sent a letter to Boy Scouts of America asking the nonprofit to delay any proposed change to its ban on gay members and leaders. The letter sparked varied reactions among scouting leaders.

Southwestern University names new president


GEORGETOWN, Texas (UMNS) - United Methodist-related Southwestern University has named Edward B. Burger as its 15th president. Burger is the Francis Christopher Oakley Third Century Professor of Mathematics at Williams College.

Two different takes on church sexuality debate


WASHINGTON (UMNS) - The Rev. Adam Hamilton, senior pastor, United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kan., recently wrote a column in the Washington Post in which he said he believes Christians in the future "will read the Bible's passages regarding homosexuality as all Christians today read the Bible's passages on slavery." Leaders of Good News, an unofficial United Methodist caucus, responded, saying its leaders "believe the Bible's teaching on sexual morality and God's intention is based on far more than a few isolated verses."
