Methodists salute Mandela

NEW YORK (UMNS) - Nelson Mandela, who celebrated his 95th birthday July 18, has embodied the struggle for social and spiritual transformation, said the Rev. Ivan Abrahams, a South African and top executive of the World Methodist Council. In 2000, Mandela received the World Methodist Peace Award.

NEW YORK (UMNS) - The religious folk who greeted Nelson Mandela at Riverside Church in 1990 were overwhelmed to be in the presence of a man who had become, as the Rev. Gardner C. Taylor described him that day, "the drum major in the music of freedom," writes UMNS reporter Linda Bloom in her Bloombytes blog. The South African leader marked his 95th birthday on July 18.

Palmer of the West Ohio Annual (regional) Conference finds a Gospel lesson and Bishop James Swanson of the Mississippi Conference gets personal in writing about the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Retired Bishop Linda Lee, interim top executive of the United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race, invokes the biblical story of Esther in another piece on this subject. Army chaplain's ordination a rare event
