Filipino deaconess: 'Resistance is a gift'

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (UMNS) — A Filipino United Methodist deaconess has long fought for justice — most recently by helping to find safe harbors for those targeted in extrajudicial killings. Norma Dollaga also raises money for a school for indigenous people. Gladys Mangiduyos has the story.

Security for all in Mosul

GENEVA (WCC) — Following news of the liberation of Mosul from the Islamic State, the World Council of Churches called on "all people of faith and good will" to pray for the people of Iraq. "We invite all member churches and church-related organizations to join in supporting those who fled Mosul and the liberated areas of the Nineveh Plains, to assist them to return and to rebuild their lives and communities," said the Rev. Olav Fykse Tveit, the WCC’s top executive.

Wildfire survivors' homes under construction

ALCOA, Tenn. — Construction has begun on new homes for survivors of last year's wildfires. The new homes are the first of at least 25 that Appalachia Service Project will build in partnership with the Holston Conference. Annette Spence has the story.

Music festival helps meet community needs

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The fifth annual MusicFest of Praise, hosted by Christ United Methodist Church, raises awareness and gathers donations for local food pantries. Those attending brought donations of food and many local businesses chipped in with sponsorships and donations. Kamelia Ani reports for the Greater New Jersey Conference.
