Council of Bishops moves May 2018 meeting from the Philippines

United Methodist Council of Bishops

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 19, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church (UMC) has decided not to hold its 2018 May meeting in Manila, Philippines, for security reasons.

Announcing the decision on Wednesday, COB President Bruce R. Ough, said the COB Executive Council was concerned about the security situation in the Philippines that has been exacerbated by militant rebellion in the southern region of the country.

The decision to change the venue was recommended by the Philippines Central Conference College of Bishops. According to Bishop Pedro M. Torio, any group of 20 or more would attract attention in light of increased terrorist strength and threats in the Philippines.

The Executive Committee has agreed that a new venue for that meeting will be in the Chicago, Illinois, area in the USA.

Bishop Ough called for prayers for “our brothers and sisters in the Philippines and to seek God’s intervention in alleviating the security situation in the country.”
