United Methodists respond to Isaac's wrath

NEW ORLEANS (UMNS) - Almost seven years to the day that Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, Hurricane Isaac made its second landfall in Louisiana on Aug. 28, overtopping an 18-mile stretch of levees and sending 12-foot floods into homes.

Ohioan nominated to mission post

NEW YORK - George G. Howard, a church leader from the West Ohio Annual (regional) Conference, is the nominee to lead the core program unit of United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, the worldwide mission agency. The action is subject to the vote of the full board of directors at the end of October. Howard was appointed to head the unit on an interim basis, effective Oct. 1.

Southwestern U. president to retire

GEORGETOWN, Texas (UMNS) - Jake B. Schrum, president of United Methodist-related Southwestern University, has announced plans to retire at the end of the university's 2012-13 fiscal year. Schrum has been president of Southwestern since July 1, 2000.

Church council voices prayers for justice

KOLYMPARI, Greece (UMNS) - Bishop Sofie Petersen from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark began the Central Committee meeting of the World Council of Churches Aug. 28 noting, "We hope and pray every day for justice in our lives, not only for our families, our countrymen and those who share our opinion, but for all our fellow human beings."

St. Louis church, partners build Ghana school

SAKOTI, U.E., Ghana (UMNS) - The Methodist Church of Ghana, in partnership with the Living Word United Methodist Church, St. Louis, has constructed a new senior high technical school at Sakoti in the Nabdam District in the Upper East Region, the Ghanian government announced. The project has six-unit classroom block, offices, a library, a staff common room and washrooms.
