Nashville, Tenn.:In a story that has since been corrected online, The New York Times listed The United Methodist Church as a sponsor of an upcoming rally on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The United Methodist Church is not sponsoring the rally.

The General Board of Church and Society is the social advocacy agency of The United Methodist Church. While the General Board of Church and Society endorses the principles of this event, they are not a co-sponsor of the event. They had no planning role and provided no financial support.

Only the General Conferencehas the authority to speak officially for The United Methodist Church. Rev. Amy Stapleton, staff person at the General Commission on Religion and Race, was identified in the article as a spokeswoman for The United Methodist Church. Rev. Stapleton was speaking on her own behalf, not on behalf of the denomination.
