Director-Student Leadership Development-Collegiate Ministry

Responsibilities:        To fulfill the objectives of the GBHEM mission, vision, and strategic plan by giving leadership to the development of programs, resources, and networking tools for the vocational discernment and leadership development of students in United Methodist campus ministries, schools, colleges, and universities. The incumbent is the lead staff person in interpreting the priorities of the agency and the church to college-age persons and leads the agency in developing the church’s understanding of the spiritual needs of college students.

Essential Job Functions:   Create and implement student-oriented leadership development and vocational discernment opportunities, materials, and resources toward creating a culture of calling within UM campus ministries, chaplaincies, colleges, schools, and universities

Lead the development of the UMSM (United Methodist Student Movement) by supporting and resourcing the development of conference and regional student gatherings, developing print and Web-based resources, resourcing a network of local churches engaged in student ministry, and by developing and resourcing the UMSM leadership team.

Direct “Imagine What’s Next” events by leading a support team of GBHEM staff, student leaders, & campus ministers to implement program plans. Oversee event budgets, registration, and coordination of logistical arrangements along with the agency event planner, overseeing site selection and negotiation of facilities/services contracts, overseeing enlistment of event leadership, and overseeing preparation of event publicity & registration materials, including Web site.

Design, implement, and maintain a program for pre-college and college students as a means for connecting them to UM college ministries, higher education institutions, and other higher education resources.

Provide general support of the work of campus ministry through assignments determined by the Assistant General Secretary.  Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:             Ability to relate to and understand the issues of the current and upcoming generation of college students is fundamental. Ability to relate to academic institutions and annual conferences critical; ability to organize regional and national events; strong organizational skills and ability to handle complex multiple tasks; ability to work independently along with the ability to work collegially with a staff team and supervise support personnel.

Bachelors and a theological Masters (or equivalent) degrees required. A doctoral degree (Ph.D., D.Min, Ed.D.) and ordination in The United Methodist Church preferred.

Understanding of current demographics of students and especially the UM Student Movement; working knowledge of collegiate ministry in either private or public institutions; demonstrated understanding of young adult spiritual formation and vocational discernment; understanding of United Methodist theology and structure. Knowledge and proven track record utilizing web-based tools for social networking and information sharing. Facility in Spanish, French, or Portuguese a plus.

Minimum of three years of experience in collegiate ministry in a Wesley Foundation, ecumenical program, college/university chaplaincy, and/or a local church; 1-2 years’ management or organizational experience; proven record of successful development of leadership programming.
