Director-Collegiate Ministry Leadership Development

Status:                          Salaried, Exempt

Responsibilities:        Leads the development of high quality leadership resources and training programs for professionals serving in collegiate ministry (college and university chaplains, Wesley Foundation directors, ecumenical campus ministers); Oversees the development of training and continuing education events; connects with and supports the global United Methodist connection, including developing leadership training and resources, in connection with the Office of Global Education; Conducts and/or analyzes research into to emerging trends in higher education, especially those that impact collegiate ministry.

Essential Job Functions:

Develops high quality leadership resources and training programs, including creating material for publication in print and electronic form that resources collegiate ministers and promotes and interprets the work of DHE in collegiate ministry.

Recruits mentors, leaders, and writers that are helpful for advancing the work of collegiate ministers; leads and offers assistance in efforts to facilitate the sharing of resources and training of collegiate ministers and oversight boards (like Boards of Directors, ACBHECMS, etc.). 

Develops resources and create awareness around emerging trends in higher education, including developing responses related to increases in online education and other trends in higher education that impact student involvement with collegiate ministries.  Develops training and continuing education events for collegiate ministers. Resource other church-related programs that engage in collegiate ministry that are not traditionally identified as collegiate ministries (i.e., Wesley Foundations, chaplaincies).                                     

Works with international collegiate ministries to promote their effectiveness and prepare resources that are relevant for ethnic minorities; involves working with collegiate ministers overseas as well as developing and supporting cooperative work with US collegiate ministers. Resources must be useful in multi-cultural settings as well as international settings.

Provides general support of the work of collegiate ministry through assignments determined by the Assistant General Secretary.  Performs other duties including board wide tasks related to the strategic plan as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:  In-depth knowledge of the UMC structure and polity; interpersonal, communication and public-speaking skills; creativity and initiative; ability to work with people of diverse theological perspectives and national backgrounds; strong attention to detail; excellent oral and written communication skills; good decision-making skills; willingness to align work with the strategic priorities and disciplinary requirements of the agency; good problem-solving skills; ability to build relationships and form networks; experience working with colleagues in a team approach.

Theological Master’s degree required. A terminal academic or professional degree preferred (Ph.D., D.Min., Ed.D.)

Expertise in current trends in internet communications, e-learning trends, and in developing multi-media resources; strong computer skills; fluency in Spanish, French, or Portuguese a plus.

Minimum of three years of experience in collegiate ministry, preferably with experience in both a Wesley Foundation and a college/university chaplaincy; 1-2 years’ management or organizational experience; proven record of successful development of leadership programming.
