Adult Choir Director

Job scope:              

The Choir Director is responsible for providing leadership to the church in the area of choral music. The Director’s primary responsibilities are to direct our 6-9 member all-volunteer choir during Sunday worship services, lead choir rehearsals, prepare the choir for participation in scheduled worship services during the school year, and oversee volunteer choral music performers during the summer. The Director works closely with the church organist and reports to the church Pastor.

Key responsibilities:

- Conduct weekly choir rehearsals and other special rehearsals as needed
- Direct the choir at weekly worship services and other special services at the request of the Pastor (the choir sings 1-2 anthems each Sunday)
- Arrange for volunteer or paid musicians to perform as soloists or in ensembles to supplement choral presentations, and arrange for instrumentalists as required to enhance choral selections
- Maintain a library of diverse choral anthems appropriate for the choir’s ability and aligned with the interests of the congregation
- Collaborate with the Pastor by selecting choral music that supports the liturgy and message for each service
- Provide anthem selections to the church office on a timely basis as specified by the Pastor
- Maintain productive choir membership, including recruitment of new choir members from within and outside the congregation as needed
- Purchase choral music and supplies within budgeted levels
- Maintain organized and up-to-date musical files
- Perform the duties of the position in the cordial and cooperative manner with the Pastor, other staff, choir members, and the congregation
- Participate with the Pastor and Staff-Parish Relations Committee in an annual performance review

Experience and qualifications:

- Prior experience as a choir director
- Experience leading choirs in translating choral music into spiritual support for worship
- Experience directing a wide range of styles ranging from Christian classics to contemporary praise music
- Ability to teach musical styles and techniques to choir members of varying ability
- Effective and affirming interpersonal communication skills
- Patience, understanding, flexibility, and ability to manage diverse personalities
- Strong organizational skills
- BA degree in music; advanced degree a plus
