WHO WE ARE
In 1852 the Rev. Hezekiah Mitcham organized a Methodist congregation of seven charter members in the community of Caney Creek. This group met at various places until what is believed to be the first Methodist church building was erected in 1854 on the banks of Caney Creek near the present day Highway 198. The church moved south into Old Malakoff near the present day Malakoff Cemetery, in the 1870’s. After occupying several buildings over the years, the present church building was dedicated in 1963.
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we gather to hear God’s Word, to enjoy Christian fellowship, and to grow in faith. We at First United Methodist-Malakoff welcome you and want you to know that our congregation is made of up of people just like you. Perhaps you are new to the area or you have been living here for some time but have not been affiliated with a church. Whatever your situation, know that we at the First United Methodist Church-Malakoff will endeavor to understand and seek to meet your needs with compassion and love.
Church can happen anywhere. It happens when we create learning opportunities that transform lives. It happens when we create safe environments where children can play and learn. It happens when education makes the path to citizenship a little easier. And when our sacrifices help nourish students’ minds and bodies. That’s putting beliefs into action.
