You are welcome. Come casual, or dressed up. Just come!
First UMC of Mathis is a generous and friendly church. Our members are diverse in their backgrounds and interests. Our worship is traditional with flavors of contemporary.
Rev. Beth Tatum is our pastor. Her preaching is lively, upbeat, Biblical and thought provoking. Using illustrations from the past and the present, Pastor Beth is tries to offer new ways to look at scripture and new ways to be in communion with God and our neighbor during the week.
Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transfotrmation of the world through compassionate community service, meaningful worship, welcoming fellowship and depening spiritual lives.
When you come to First UMC/Mathis, expect to be greeted at the door by Arline Matlock, friendly face and helpful spirit. We host a Meet & Greet coffee & snack time at 10:20 prior to worship and immediately after in the rear of the Sanctuary area. We have a great congregation with a great spirit. Be prepared to be greeted, accepted and offered the hand of Christian fellowship.
We have a small elevator available for those with mobility challenges on Duval St. Restrooms are located downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. A baby changing table is inside the Upper Room off the Sanctuary. Children's worship bags are stocked with crayons and coloring pages.
You'll notice Teddy Bears sitting in the pews. We bless those bears and share them with sick ort others in need of prayer.
At 10:50 announcements about our shared life are made, and then a musical selcetion is played to help us focus for worship. Typical worship follows the pattern of Gathering, for Praise, Hearing God's Word, Responding to the Word, and Preparing to Serve. Bulletins are provided to help guide evryone through readings, prayers and the songs for the day. We have a Children's Sermon time with the pastor, and then younger children may go to our nursery where volunteers will engage them in play to reinforce Bible stories. We observe the Lord's Supper each 1st and 3rd Sunday, and all Christians are invited to participate. We usually close worship affirming our mission together.
Church can happen anywhere. It happens when we create learning opportunities that transform lives. It happens when we create safe environments where children can play and learn. It happens when education makes the path to citizenship a little easier. And when our sacrifices help nourish students’ minds and bodies. That’s putting beliefs into action.
