Event Details

We are excited to celebrate Bishop Oliveto’s latest book, Together at the Table: Diversity without Division in The United Methodist Church.

In Together at the Table, Oliveto continues her public message of LGBTQ inclusion, expanding these ideas through her personal story of becoming the first openly LGBTQ person to be elected bishop in The United Methodist Church. Together at the Table continues threads from her previous book, Our Strangely Warmed Hearts (Abingdon 2018), which explores the calling of LGBTQ persons into ministry, as well as recounts the complicated history associated with the topic.

Bishop Karen P. Oliveto serves as the leader of the Mountain Sky Area of The United Methodist Church. It includes 400 congregations in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and a small section of Idaho. Bishop Oliveto was elected to the area after serving as the first woman pastor of the 12,000-member Glide Memorial United Methodist Church in San Francisco, Calif. She is the first woman to serve as senior pastor of one of The United Methodist Church’s 100 largest congregations. She served Glide from 2008 until her election as bishop.

Bishop Oliveto is the co-author of Talking About Homosexuality: A Congregational Resource (Pilgrim Press: 2004), and the author of Our Strangely Warmed Hearts: Coming Out into God's Call (Abingdon, 2018) and Together at the Table: Embracing Diversity without Division (Westminster John Knox: 2018).

This event is held in an effort to increase awareness of the changing context of LGBTQ inclusion within The United Methodist Church, to create a welcome space and open forum for all people to explore the ideas, theologies and ideologies surrounding the topic of LGBTQ inclusion in faith communities, and to facilitate ecumenical conversation in the Denver-metro area.

The program will be presented in the TUMC Sanctuary (Level 4), followed by a book signing and refreshments in the TUMC Atrium (Level 1). Registration is suggested, but not required. Books are available for pre-order at trinityumc.org/together. A limited number of each of Bishop Oliveto’s books will be available for purchase at the event.
