The United Methodist Church has a global presence. According to a 2012 report, there are almost 47,000 United Methodist churches in more than 125 countries. These local churches are organized regionally.
Within the U.S., five geographic jurisdictions (regions) include eight to fifteen annual conferences each. U.S. jurisdictional conferences meet simultaneously every four years to elect and assign bishops and some members of general church agencies and, in some cases, to develop jurisdictional programs. United Methodists in Africa, Europe, and the Philippines are organized by geographical regions called “central conferences.” Like jurisdictions in the U.S., each central conference consists of a number of annual conferences. Learn more about central conferences.
