James E. Swanson, Sr., was born in Houston, Texas, to the late Carl Edward Swanson and Arnola Triplett. He graduated from Southern Bible College, Houston, with a B.S. degree in Christian Ministries and from C. H. Mason Seminary, ITC, Atlanta, with the M. Div. degree.
James was ordained an elder in the South Georgia Conference. He served as pastor of St. Mary's Road United Methodist Church in Columbus, GA, for 14 years, where the church grew from 16 active members to a membership of 950 with 525 in average worship attendance. While at St. Mary's Road, he was a co-chair of the Mayor's Task Force on Gang Activity where he helped erode the influence and growth of gangs. In 2001, he became Superintendent of the Savannah District of the South Georgia Conference. He is known across the connection as an excellent preacher, teacher, visionary leader and mentor.
James Swanson was elected to the Episcopacy in July 2004 by the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference and was assigned to the Holston Area.. He has served as a delegate to General Conference from 1992-2004. He is a trustee of Emory & Henry, Hiwassee, Tennessee Wesleyan and Andrew Colleges. He was a founding member of the Steering Committee for the Convocation of Pastors of African American United Methodist Churches. After serving the Holston Area for 8 years, he was assigned to the Mississippi Area in 2012.
He is married to the former Delphine Yvonne Ramsey. They are the proud parents of six children: Karen, James, Jr., Shondell, Carlton, JaNaé and Joshua, and have ten grandchildren.
